Identity

Preview: Write a definition for ‘identity’.

Identity is about how an individual feels about themselves and in relation to different groups of people. People are born with different characteristics. People might shape their identities based on how they relate to these characteristics. Culture and society are often important for how people shape their identities. People choose some of their identities and may be given other identities by others, such as parents, religious leaders, or authorities. A person may choose to convert from one religion to another. Parents may raise their children to speak a particular language, celebrate certain holidays and wear traditional clothes, all of which may show an ethnic identity.

Some parts of identity can be seen, like clothing. Other parts may be unseen, like religious or political beliefs. It is common to have many different identities. Identities often change during a lifetime. Some people might have one identity that is most important to them. This particular identity might also change during a lifetime.

Individuals and groups typically do not only consider identity as important in life. For example, they may also consider personality traits, interests and preferences as important.

Reflection/Discussion:

  1. Which are your most important identities?
  2. Which are the most important identities for people that you know and care about?
  3. Why are these identities important?
