Preview: Write one sentence for each of the words ‘diversity’, ‘pluralism’ and ‘social justice’ to explain them.

Diversity means that there are many differences and a lot of variety. Human diversity means that people have different identities. Diversity can be very valuable for people, their relationships with others and their communities, and the society where they live.

Pluralism is the belief that diversity of opinions, actors and ideas is healthy for a society and leads to a more representative political system. Pluralism may result in greater representation, including of members of minority groups, but it does not necessarily lead to more meaningful participation. Pluralism may also not address particular challenges faced by minority groups. This is because pluralism in itself does not address imbalances of power between majority groups and minority groups. Majority groups may still use their power to make decisions that do not support or even harm the interests of minority groups.

Social justice seeks to address imbalances of power between groups so that communities and society become more equitable. Social justice is about removing systemic and structural barriers, such as discrimination and poverty, for everyone to:

• access their rights;
• enjoy the same opportunities;
• access resources of the society;
• actively participate in decision making that affects them;
• actively participate in their communities; and
• have their basic human needs met.

This learning resource seeks to present ideas about how people can contribute to social justice by protecting, promoting and strengthening minority rights.

Reflection/Discussion

Pluralism is a good start to achieving social justice even if it does not address imbalances of power between majority groups and minority groups.
