Intersectionality

PREVIEW

Have you ever heard the word ‘intersectionality’? If yes, what does it mean?

Intersectionality describes how discrimination based on different identities overlaps or intersects. It was first used in 1989 by Professor Kimberlé Crenshaw  when she was working as a lawyer on discrimination cases. She had noticed that persons with multiple minority identities were sometimes discriminated against based on these different identities. She also realised that these different forms of discrimination compounded each other (Coaston 2019).

Intersectionality emphasises the importance of considering the interconnectedness of a person’s identities when analysing the forms of discrimination and disadvantages they face.

REFLECTION/DISCUSSION

Have you ever experienced discrimination and disadvantages based on more than one minority identity you have? If yes, how were you affected? How did you respond? How did others respond?
